Transponder, fob, or smart key? Know what your car uses before you call
How to tell a mechanical key, transponder chip key, remote-head key, separate fob, or push-to-start smart key apart, and what each one actually takes to replace.
First, look at the key in your hand
Most people find out what kind of key their car uses on the worst possible day, standing next to a locked door. Ten minutes of looking now, at the key on your ring and at the owner's manual in your glove box, saves you a wrong quote and a wasted appointment later. Mechanical keys and transponder chip keys

A remote-head key has the lock, unlock, trunk, and panic buttons built into the head of the key itself. Underneath, both are still transponder keys, so all the cutting and immobilizer programming applies, and the remote side has to be paired to the car on top of that. Expect the upper part of the transponder range for these.
A separate fob with a plain metal key is really two problems that can be solved separately. If you only lost the fob, you often just need a replacement fob programmed and no cutting at all. If both went missing, you need the blade cut, sometimes by code from the VIN, plus fob programming. Say clearly on the phone which pieces are gone, because it changes the quote.
Proximity and push-to-start smart keys
A proximity key never leaves your pocket. You touch the handle to unlock and press a button to start. Replacement typically runs $300 to $750 all in for the key and programming. European and luxury vehicles usually land between $525 and $1,125 or higher, because those keys are often ordered against the VIN, require dealer-level security access, and sometimes an online authorization step that adds real time on site.
Before you assume you're stranded, check your fob for a hidden blade. Most proximity fobs have a small catch that releases a thin emergency key, which fits a lock cylinder in the driver's door, sometimes under a plastic cap on the handle. Some cars also come with a valet key that opens the doors and starts the engine but won't open the trunk or glove box. Nearly every push-to-start car has a backup start method as well, usually holding the fob against the start button or a marked spot in the console, and your manual says which.
Laser-cut keys, and why not every truck can cut yours
Look at your blade edge on. An old-style key has teeth notched into one edge. A laser-cut key, also called a sidewinder or high-security key, has a wavy groove milled down the middle of the flat face, usually identical on both sides so the key goes in either way up. They feel thicker and more solid than the key you grew up with.
Cutting one takes a milling machine, not the duplicator sitting on a hardware store counter, and the machine has to be loaded with the right blank for your vehicle. Not every mobile locksmith carries that machine, and blank stock varies by make. Ask directly when you call: do you cut sidewinder blanks for my year, make, and model, and do you have the blank on the truck today. A straight yes or no there is worth more than any online estimate.
OEM or aftermarket: when the cheaper key is fine
OEM keys come through the vehicle manufacturer's supply chain. Aftermarket keys are built by third parties to the same specification, and for a lot of vehicles they work without any trouble, especially plain transponder keys and many remote-head keys. Going aftermarket often saves $75 to $225 on the same job, and for a second spare on an older car that is usually money well saved.
Where it goes sideways is newer proximity keys and a fair number of European models, where only an OEM key behaves the way the car expects. Warning signs of a cheap key that technically programmed: short remote range, remote start that won't engage, a fob the car forgets on cold mornings, or driver profiles for seats and mirrors that stop following the key. Ask which type you're being quoted and what the warranty covers. A year on the part and the programming is a fair answer.
Before you call, and the dead battery that fools everybody
Rule out the cheapest failure first. A dead coin cell looks exactly like a dead fob: nothing at the door, no lock or unlock, sometimes a key not detected message on the dash. It's usually a CR2032, a couple of dollars at any drugstore, and about two minutes with a small flathead screwdriver. Try your spare fob too. People pay for service calls every week over a battery.
If the fob really is finished, have your details ready before you dial. The number of working keys you currently have matters more than most callers expect, because programming an extra key alongside a working one is a different and cheaper job than building a key for a car that has none.
